Adjective Endings

Dutch adjectives inflect with -e in most positions — but not all. The key exception is an indefinite article (een) before a het-word, where the adjective keeps its base form.

The same adjective can look different depending on the noun it modifies:

een groot huis → a big house  (no -e)
het grote huis → the big house  (-e)
een grote auto → a big car  (-e)
Het huis is groot. → The house is big.  (no -e)

1. The rule at a glance

The adjective stays uninflected (no -e) in three situations: before a singular het-word with een (een groot huis), before a singular het-word with no article at all (koud water, vers brood), and in the predicative position after zijn/worden. Everywhere else it takes -e.

Context de-word het-word
Definite (de / het) de grote auto -e het grote huis -e
Indefinite (een) een grote auto -e een groot huis NO -e
Demonstrative (deze/dit/die/dat) deze grote auto -e dit grote huis -e
Possessive (mijn/zijn/haar…) mijn grote auto -e mijn grote huis -e
No article (plural or mass noun) grote auto's -e groot nieuws NO -e
Predicative (after zijn/worden) De auto is groot NO -e Het huis is groot NO -e
The one exception to remember: een + het-word → no -e. All other attributive positions (definite, demonstrative, possessive, plural) → add -e.

2. Predicative adjectives — never -e

When an adjective follows a linking verb (zijn, worden, blijven, lijken, voelen), it is predicative and never takes -e.

De auto is rood. — The car is red. (predicative — no -e)
Het huis wordt groot. — The house is getting big. (predicative after worden)
Ze lijkt moe. — She seems tired. (predicative after lijken)
Dat voelt goed. — That feels good. (predicative after voelen)
de rode auto — the red car (attributive — -e)

3. Spelling changes when adding -e

Adding -e can trigger the same spelling rules that apply elsewhere in Dutch.

Rule Base form With -e
Long vowel (aa/oo/ee) — drop one vowel rood, groot, oud, breed rode, grote, oude, brede
Short vowel — double the consonant dik, nat, slim, vet dikke, natte, slimme, vette
-f → -v lief, doof, grof lieve, dove, grove
-s → -z grijs, boos, wijs grijze, boze, wijze
No change (base already ends in -e) oranje, roze oranje, roze

4. Common mistakes

Wrong Correct Why
een grote huis een groot huis een + het-word → no -e
het groot huis het grote huis definite + het-word → -e
De auto is rode. De auto is rood. predicative → no -e
een dikke huis een dik huis een + het-word → no -e (huis)
mijn groot huis mijn grote huis possessive always → -e
een leuke boek een leuk boek een + het-word (boek) → no -e
