Diminutives

Dutch diminutives add -je (and its variants) to nouns to express smallness, affection, or informality. Every diminutive is a het-word, regardless of the base noun.

de man → het mannetje — the little man (de-word becomes het-word!)
het huis → het huisje — the little house / the cottage
een kopje koffie — a cup of coffee (one of the most common diminutives)

Diminutives also soften requests and add a friendly, informal tone — very characteristic of Dutch.

1. All diminutives are het-words

No matter what article the base noun has, its diminutive always uses het.

Base noun Article Diminutive Article
man de mannetje het
dag de dagje het
huis het huisje het
kind het kindje het

2. Choosing the right suffix

There are five diminutive suffixes. The choice depends on how the word ends.

-je — default (most words)

Words ending in a long vowel + consonant (other than l/m/n/r/ng), diphthongs, or most other endings.

huis → huisjedag → dagjefiets → fietsjejas → jasjetas → tasjestraat → straatje
-tje — long vowel/diphthong + l/m/n/r/ng; or unstressed -el/-em/-en/-er
maan → maantjedeur → deurtjekeel → keeltjetafel → tafeltjeregen → regentjekamer → kamertje
-etje — short vowel + l/m/n/r/ng (consonant doubles)
man → mannetjebal → balletjering → ringetjekin → kinnetjeham → hammetje
-pje — words ending in -m
arm → armpjefilm → filmpjeboom → boompjedroom → droompjebezem → bezempje
Quick decision tree: Does it end in -m? → -pje. Short vowel + l/m/n/r/ng? → -etje (double). Long vowel/diphthong + l/m/n/r, or unstressed -el/-en/-er? → -tje. Everything else → -je.
